As commercial photographer, I’ve had the privilege of working with a variety of talented individuals across diverse fields on their branding photography. Recently, I had the pleasure of capturing the work of Emily Ingman, a tattoo artist based at Studio 555 in Holt. Emily’s artistry, combined with the relaxing atmosphere of her studio, presented an opportunity to tell a visually compelling story. Here’s a glimpse into my journey of photographing Emily’s remarkable tattoo work.
When you walk into Studio 555, you instantly feel relaxed and looked after. The studio is a blend of modern aesthetics and gorgeous dried flower insallations by Arie & Vine — natural light filtering through large windows, and a comfortable space where clients can feel at ease.
Understanding Emily’s style was crucial for the shoot. Her tattoos are known for their intricate fine line designs, blending traditional and contemporary elements. I spent some time observing her at work, noting the precision and creativity in each piece she created.
One of my primary goals was to highlight the intricacy of Emily’s tattoos. Close-up shots were essential. I focused on capturing the delicate lines, and shading that made each piece unique.
In addition to the detailed shots, I wanted to capture the human element of Emily’s work. This meant photographing her interactions with clients, the concentration on her face as she worked, and the reactions of her clients when they saw their new tattoos for the first time. These candid moments added depth to the visual story, portraying not just the art but the emotional experience behind it.
Emily’s tattooing process was fascinating to document. From sketching initial designs and preparing her equipment to the careful application of the tattoo itself, each step was a blend of meticulous technique and creative expression. I took a series of photos showing this process, providing a behind-the-scenes look at how Emily’s beautiful tattoos come to life.
Video clips were particularly effective in capturing the delicate movements of Emily’s hands as she tattooed. These clips added a dynamic element to the visual story, highlighting the precision and care involved in her work and are perfect for use on social media!
Photographing Emily Ingman’s tattoos was a truly unique experience. It wasn’t just about capturing images; it was about telling the story of a passionate artist dedicated to her craft. Emily’s work is not only a testament to her skill but also to the personal connections she builds with her clients.
Through this project, I gained a deeper appreciation for the art of tattooing and the intricate beauty that each tattoo holds. It was a privilege to work with Emily and to be a part of sharing her artistry with the world. If you ever find yourself in Holt, I highly recommend visiting Studio 555 and experiencing Emily’s work firsthand. It’s an experience that is as visually captivating as it is inspiring.
