As an Oxfordshire-based family photographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing countless precious moments for families. Over the years, I’ve learned what works best to ensure a fun, relaxed, and ultimately successful family photoshoot. Here are my top 10 tips to help you prepare for your next family photography session.
Oxfordshire offers a plethora of stunning backdrops, from the rolling hills of the Cotswolds to the historic charm of Oxford city. Think about what setting best reflects your family’s personality. Do you love the outdoors? Consider a park or countryside location. Prefer something inside? Book your session in my beautiful natural light photography studio in the heart of Wallingford. It’s a warm, inviting, home from home where little ones can play, relax and enjoy their session.
Natural light is a photographer’s best friend. If you’re having your session outside, we will schedule your shoot for either early morning or late afternoon when the light is soft and golden. This time of day, often referred to as the “golden hour,” provides the most flattering and beautiful light for portraits.
While matching outfits can be cute, coordinating colors and styles often look more natural. Choose a color palette that complements the location and each family member’s complexion. Avoid large logos or busy patterns that can distract from the subjects – you want the focus to be on your faces and interactions.
Talk to your children about the photoshoot beforehand to set expectations. Let them know it’s going to be a fun experience. Bring along their favorite toys or snacks to keep them happy and occupied. The more comfortable they are, the better the photos will turn out.
Some of the best photos come from candid moments. While a few posed shots are great, allow for spontaneity. Play with your kids, share a laugh, and interact naturally. These genuine moments of connection often produce the most heartfelt images.
Make sure everyone is well-rested and fed before the shoot. A good night’s sleep and a hearty meal can make a world of difference, especially for young children. Also, plan for extra time in case of any last-minute wardrobe changes or other delays.
Props can add a fun element to your photoshoot and provide a distraction for young children. Consider bringing items that are meaningful to your family, such as a favorite blanket, a cherished book, or seasonal items for autumn or spring.
Flexibility is key, especially when working with children. Be prepared for things not to go exactly as planned and embrace the unexpected moments. Sometimes, the most memorable photos come from these unplanned, candid situations.
Discuss your vision and any specific shots you want with your me beforehand. Share any concerns or special requests you might have. I will always work with you to ensure your expectations are met and that you feel comfortable throughout the process.
Above all, remember to enjoy the experience. A family photoshoot is not just about capturing great images but also about spending quality time together. Relax, have fun, and let your personalities shine through. The more relaxed and happy you are, the better the photos will be.
A family photoshoot is a wonderful way to capture memories that will last a lifetime. By following these tips, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience that results in beautiful, cherished photos. If you’re in the Oxfordshire area and looking for a family photographer, I’d be delighted to help you create lasting memories. Get in touch now to book your session.
